What is an apprentice?

Apprenticeship is a proven industry-based learning system that combines on-the-job experience with technical classroom training.  Upon completion of the specified training period, apprentices receive a Certificate of Qualification.  Apprenticeship can also be described as "Earn While You Learn" meaning you earn a real wage while learning a skill.  This provides a real advantage over attending a traditional college or university, where tuition rates are much higher, which usually forces an individual to obtain a student loan, and they are not paid for any portion of their training.

What is a journeyperson?

A journeyperson is an individual who has completed the required on-the-job training and technical classroom training, passed a certification exam, and has received a Certificate of Qualification from the Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission.  Certification proves that a person is qualifed to work in a specific trade.  Some employers may offer a wage incentive for those who have achieved journeyperson status.

What is the Red Seal Program?

The Interprovincial Standards Red Seal Program (also known as the Red Seal Program) was established to provide greater mobility across Canada for skilled workers.  Tradespeople are able to obtain a Red Seal endorsement on their Certificate of Qualification by successfully completing an interprovincial examination.  With Red Seal Certification an individual may work in any province or territory in Canada.  The Red Seal Program is recognized as the interprovincial standard of excellence in the skilled trades.

Technical Classroom Training

During an apprenticeship, you will attend periods of technical training for instruction.  This is where theory, such as math, science and communication skills are taught.  However, about 80% of your learning will be on-the-job and only about 20% will be in the classroom.
